2 Second Starts Bicycle Stem

Designed, engineered and fabricated as part of an ‘advanced prototyping’ class at University.

As an avid cyclist, the stem represents the convergence of design & engineering — an opportunity to design for both form & function.

The stem utilises CNC Machining [lathe + end mill] to shape the form from a billet of 6061-T6 Aluminium.

The stem design accounts for the restrictions of the 3-axis CNC machine available at RMIT, but pushes these to the limits with a contoured body with angular ends.

Post-processing was required to remove machine marks & create a high-shine in preparation for anodizing & laser engraving.
